Why March is an Ideal Time to Visit Phillip Island: Beaches, Picnics and Coastal Walks

While the weather is still warm and the peak summer crowds have begun to ease, March is one of the best times of year to experience Phillip Island. It’s perfect for a late summer escape as the island feels relaxed, the beaches are inviting, and the natural beauty is at its best.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway from Melbourne or a longer coastal break, autumn offers the ideal mix of beach days, relaxed sunset picnics and scenic walks.

Enjoy Phillip Island’s Iconic Beaches

Even as summer begins to wind down, Phillip Island remains the ideal spot for swimming, surfing and exploring the shoreline. One of the best parts about visiting at this time of year is that the water is beautifully warm after months of summer sunshine.

Cowes Main Beach is a popular spot for families with its calm waters and sheltered parkland. It’s ideal for a relaxed paddle, an ice cream by the water or a stroll along the jetty, a wonderful spot to soak up the autumn sun!

Smiths Beach is another favourite for locals and visitors alike. With stunning headlands and great surf conditions, it’s perfect for those wanting to spend a day in the water or exploring rock pools at low tide.

Always remember to swim between the flags and download the Beachsafe app here to check conditions before entering the water.

The Perfect Time for Sunset Picnics

With blue skies and warm days, now is the perfect time to pack a picnic basket and explore Phillip Island. Stock up on local cheeses and freshly baked goodies, take your time and make the most of the island in March.

Head to The Gurdie’s Winery for a picnic overlooking the idyllic Western Port Bay, swing by Bassine Specialty Cheeses on your way for some delicious handmade artisan farmhouse cheeses.

For the bird watchers out there, Rhyll Inlet and Conservation Hill offer peaceful surroundings and beautiful views across the wetlands. A great place to relax, watch birdlife and enjoy the slower pace of island life.

Swan Lake is a wonderful option for families, and on your way, why not stop by The Store Phillip Island in Ventnor to pick up some freshly baked treats, or Omaru Farm Store & Café for delicious, homegrown produce.

Explore Spectacular Coastal Walks

Phillip Island’s natural beauty truly shines when explored on foot, and mild weather makes it an ideal time to discover the island’s scenic walking trails.

The Cape Woolamai Walk is one of the most rewarding hikes on the island. The 8km circuit trail takes you past dramatic cliffs, sweeping ocean views and the famous pinnacles. The walk takes around 4 hours return, but the views make every step worthwhile.

For a shorter option, look to the Nobbies Boardwalk, located at the western tip of the island. The 500m return path winds along the coastline, offering incredible views out to the Nobbies and toward Seal Rocks. Only 20 minutes return, this stunning boardwalk is wonderful for all ages.

Even a walk along one of the beautiful beaches on Phillip Island at sunset can be just as memorable. As the sky shifts through shades of orange and pink, the island slows down and the coastline takes on a peaceful atmosphere that’s hard to beat.

A Perfect Time for a Phillip Island Escape

March offers a special balance on Phillip Island with warm days, stunning natural scenery and a more relaxed pace after a busy summer season. With beautiful beaches, sunset picnics and coastal walks around every corner, it’s the perfect time to explore everything the island has to offer.
