Riding the Waves: Why Phillip Island is a Must-Visit Surf Destination This March

March is shaping up to be an unmissable month for surfers and ocean lovers as Phillip Island takes centre stage on the surfing calendar. Whether you’re a seasoned pro chasing the perfect wave or a beginner keen to experience the island’s renowned surf culture, there’s no better time to visit. And with the Phillip Island Pro Qualifying Series 3000 making a highly anticipated debut from March 17-22, the island is set to be buzzing with world-class surf action. Here’s why Phillip Island should be on every surfer’s radar this month.

Phillip Island Pro: Surfing at Its Best

The Phillip Island Pro isn’t just any surf competition—it’s a high-stakes QS 3000 event that will determine which surfers from Asia and Australia/Oceania qualify for the 2025 Challenger Series. With some of the best up-and-coming surfers battling it out on Phillip Island’s powerful waves, this event promises non-stop action, impressive displays of talent, and an electric atmosphere both in and out of the water.

For spectators, the Phillip Island Pro is the perfect chance to witness elite-level surfing up close while soaking in the island’s stunning coastal views. Whether you’re lining the shores of Cape Woolamai—the island’s most famous surf break—or exploring the nearby surf spots, the energy of the event will be impossible to miss.

For avid kneeboarders, catch all the action from the Neil Luke Kneeboard Classic, March 15 - 16 at Cape Woolamai.

A Surfer’s Paradise: The Best Breaks on Phillip Island

Beyond the competition, Phillip Island is home to some of Victoria’s most consistent and thrilling surf breaks. The island's beaches boast big wave conditions, left and right breaks, and plenty of small, consistent waves suitable for beginners. The island's beaches are home to a vibrant local surfing community of all ages and skill levels. Keen to learn how to surf? Island Surfboards Surf School is one of the best in the state!

Victoria’s first National Surfing Reserve was launched on Phillip Island on 16 March 2013. The Reserve is made up of four sites along Phillip Island’s coast - Woolamai, Smiths Beach, Summerlands and Cat Bay. The Reserve recognises that the ‘Island’ is special for its Aboriginal and natural values, and all surfers must play a role in protecting these. The philosophy of National Surfing Reserves is to ‘care, share and preserve’.

Here are some of the best spots to check out while you’re here:

🌊 Cape Woolamai – Arguably the island’s most famous surf beach, Cape Woolamai is a magnet for experienced surfers chasing fast, powerful waves. It’s also the primary venue for the Phillip Island Pro, making it a must-visit this March.

🏄 Smiths Beach – A great spot for beginners and all-rounders, Smiths Beach offers more mellow waves and a welcoming surf school for those looking to hone their skills.

🏄 Cat Bay–Offers both high-quality left and right-hand reef breaks that allow surfing when other south-facing Island beaches have onshore winds.

Beyond the Waves: Surf Culture & Island Vibes

Phillip Island isn’t just about the surf—it’s about the laid-back coastal lifestyle that makes every trip feel like a mini getaway. After a long session in the water, grab a bite at one of the island’s top café spots, for a post-surf refuel. If you’re after a sunset drink and meal with a sea view, Hotel Phillip Island or Saltwater Phillip Island is perfect for unwinding after a day on the waves.
