Industry Update 14 January 2021

Welcome to 2021!

What a difference a few weeks can make! Whilst we follow the roller coaster of updates and restriction changes across the country, our region has been fortunate to welcome visitors consistently since our last update. Congratulations to our businesses for implementing key protocols inline with the restrictions in place.

We do recognise the frustrations faced by many local businesses with limited staffing resources to service the many visitors and thank you all for what you have been able to achieve under immense pressure.

Looking forward we are pleased to have set a date for our annual February Update to Industry, please see the details below. We have scheduled the event a little later in February, after school goes back to hopefully catch up with many of you and share updates from various speakers and with time to hear from you.

Visit Victoria and Tennis Australia have shared exciting news with a newly created Phillip Island Trophy to be part of the second week of the Australian Open. See story

You will find below some of the key media pieces that have been published about the region, to continue to inspire visitation in the months ahead.

As always we are a phone call away, and can arrange a visit to see you if you would like to discuss key challenges or some good news stories with us.

Marketing and PR Update

The last two months Destination Phillip Island has executed a range of marketing activities including paid social media advertising, blog, print media, radio ad and public relations.

Australian Traveller’s – Reclaim Summer campaign was launched at mid-November and featured a hard copy magazine and digital assets. Week 1 magazine copy sales were up 31.6% y-o-y (since Nov 2019), and website traffic was up 54.4% y-o-y since launch (since Nov 2019). Phillip Island’s content URLs on their website exceeded their targets with our display banner impressions (target was 25,000 v current delivery of 67,379!).

Targeted Social Media advertisements on our Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest accounts were delivered in the lead up to Christmas, generating website traffic and engagement. A Festive Season blog post went live mid-December, guiding people to local procedures to help create their Phillip Island Festive Spread, accompanied with a dedicated Instagram story. Organic social media posts always remain on, featuring a mix of User Generated Content, owned and shared.

Our 3GG radio ad continued to the end of December and encouraged visitors to pack the car and head to Phillip Island for unique wildlife, wide-open spaces and family fun.

Two double pages spreads were included in the Gippsland Magazine, sharing compelling reasons to visit for those in the Gippsland region and reading the publication across Victoria.

PR has included several feature digital articles in Australian Traveller, Time Out, Escape7 and other various media.
ABC Radio Melbourne shared various stories about visitors' memories of holidays on Phillip Island.
